Women's Rowing in Action on Both Coasts This Weekend
Varsity 8 to race at San Diego Crew Classic while rest of squad heads to Occoquan Sprints
Watch San Diego Crew Classic: Saturday: | Sunday
ON THE LINE: The George Washington women's rowing team will split its squad for regattas on opposite sides of the United States this weekend. The Colonials' Varsity 8 will travel out west for the two-day San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego, California.
The rest of GW's squad - the JV8, Varsity 4, 2V4 and Novice 4 - will be in action at the Occoquan Sprints on Sunday on the Occoquan River in Woodbridge, Virginia.
LAST TIME OUT: GW started off the season strong with a well-rounded performance at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia last weekend.
The Varsity 8 finished eighth overall out of the 25 boats at the event when it placed second in the Petite Final on Saturday afternoon.
The JV8 also rowed in a Petite Final, placing second out of six crews to clinch an eighth-place showing out of the 30 crews that started the event.
CREW CLASSIC FORMAT: GW is entered in the Cal Cup, which is awarded to the top Women's Collegiate Varsity 8 boat. Eleven boats will race in a pair of Saturday heats with the top three finishers in each heat advancing to Sunday's Grand Final. The remaining boats will compete in the Petite Final.
The field includes GW, Loyola Marymount, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Diego State, UC Santa Clara, SMU, Saint Joseph's, Stanford, Tennessee and Villanova.
LAST TIME IN SAN DIEGO: The Colonials battled fog and rough racing conditions to finish in fourth place in a highly-competitive Petite Final field. Only three members of this year's Varsity 8 raced in San Diego last season.
OCCOQUAN FORMAT: Both the JV8 and Novice 4 will each row just one time in their respective finals. The JV8 will be in action at 12:36 p.m. while the Novice 4 races at 10:49 a.m.
The Varsity 4 and 2V4 will compete in morning heats starting at 10:07 a.m. and will advance to either the Grand Final (12:50 p.m.) or Petite Final (12:43 p.m.) later in the day.
