WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's rowing team will make the short trip to the Occoquan River in Woodbridge, Virginia, for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday morning.

GW, aiming for its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship, has registered top-three finishes in each of the past two seasons and has totaled seven second-place finishes dating back to 1996.

The winner of this year's Atlantic 10 Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Rowing Championship, May 30-June 1 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Colonials won the Varsity 8 Gold Medal at last year's event en route to a third-place overall finish on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey. It marked the third time in program history that GW has won the Varsity 8 title (2013, 2006, 2001).

Morning heats will commence at 9:00 a.m. with two heats each for the Varsity 4 (9:00, 9:10) followed by the JV8 (9:20, 9:30) and the Varsity 8 (9:40, 9:50).

The top three crews from each heat will advance to the Grand Final, with the remaining boats going to the Petite Final, where a points system will be implemented to determine the final standings.

The Petite and Grand Finals will launch beginning at 11:00 a.m.

GW's 3rd Varsity 8 is automatically entered in the 3V8 Grand Final field and will row against Rhode Island, Saint Joseph's and Fordham at 11:00 a.m.

Rhode Island has won the past two Atlantic 10 Championships and four of the past six titles. Massachusetts has won 13 Atlantic 10 Championships, the most in the conference.
