Colonials Athletics Weekend Preview
Baseball Hosts Alumni Day & Senior Day This Weekend; Women's Rowing Concludes Season on the Road

A preview of George Washington's varsity athletic events this weekend. The Colonials' baseball team will host Xavier for a three-game series at Barcroft Park while the women's rowing team hits the road for its season finale.
The George Washington baseball team begins its final homestand of 2012 with a three-game weekend series against Xavier beginning Friday at 4 p.m. at renovated Barcroft Park.
Saturday's 1 p.m. game will be Alumni & Dedication Day. The Colonials will welcome dozens of alumni to the newly renovated Barcroft Park. A reception will be held starting at 11:00 a.m., with tours of the new facility occurring periodically throughout the afternoon. Prior to Sunday's 12 p.m. game, the GW Baseball team and Department of Athletics and Recreation will honor seven seniors - Jimmy Best, Eric Lara, Luke Mirabella, Ollie Mittag, Brett Bowers, Ryan Thomas and Stephen Oswald - for their years of dedication to the program. The Colonials complete their home schedule with a non-conference tilt against William & Mary on Tuesday, May 15.
GW (18-30, 4-14 A-10) returns home after taking the series finale at Saint Joseph's, 2-1, last Sunday. Junior Kenny O'Brien was brilliant out of the bullpen, earning his team-best fifth win of the season after pitching four shutout innings of relief with no hits and four strikeouts. Sophomore Owen Beightol provided the go-ahead run with a solo homer in the top of the eighth inning to allow the Colonials to salvage the series.
GW is 9-15 at Barcroft Park this season, including 4-6 in its last 10 home games. Senior Stephen Oswald leads the offense, batting .305 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBIs. Classmate Jimmy Best shares the team lead with four home runs to go along with 24 RBIs and 10 doubles. Beightol ranks second on the team with a .297 batting average along with eight doubles and four home runs.

The George Washington women's rowing team will conclude its 2011-12 season with a return to the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J., for the annual Eastern Sprints.
Last week on the Cooper River, the Colonials totaled 42 points to earn second place at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships, their best finish at the event since the 2003 season. Head Coach Eric Carcich was named A-10 Coach of the Year after leading the Colonials the second-place finish, as well as victories in the George's Trophy, Class of 1998 Cup and George Washington Invitational this season.
The Colonials will race four boats - a Varsity 8, JV 8, Varsity 4 and Third Varsity 8 - in the morning heats with the top two boats each advancing to the Grand Finals. The remaining boats will race in the Petite Finals.
The Varsity 8 will row against A-10 Champion Rhode Island, Navy, Virginia, Bucknell and Massachusetts in its heat. The JV 8 will face Rhode Island, Buffalo, Boston College, Northeastern and Holy Cross, while the Varsity 4 rows against MIT, Bucknell, UMass, Boston University and Navy.
