Nov. 7, 2011
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - The George Washington women's rowing team concluded its fall schedule this past weekend with a strong all-around performance at the Head of the Occoquan hosted by George Mason. The Colonials totaled four top-4 finishes, highlighted by a second-place performance in the Women's Collegiate Eight. "I was very pleased with our final fall tune-up as it gave us an opportunity to show our true speed on a very fair course with minimal wind," said head coach Eric Carcich. "The women's field has grown at this event over the years and for us it is a great race to end the fall season." GW entered two boats in the Women's Collegiate Eight event with the Colonials' Varsity 8 finishing in second place out 25 crews in 18:17.31, 10 seconds behind first-place George Mason. The Colonials' JV 8 followed in 15th place (19:39.3). The Colonials had two freshman boats competing in the Women's Collegiate Novice 8 with the Novice A crew, comprised of the team's top freshman, finishing in fourth place (20:06.8) out of 24 boats. The Novice B boat finished in 13th place in 22:48.63. GW also shined in the Women's Collegiate 4 event, taking 2nd (20:11.56) and fourth (20:32.53) overall out of 23 crews. "The progress we have made as a team this fall has been easy to see," said Coach Carcich. "We still have a lot of work to do this winter in preparation for our traditional racing season, but I do know we are on the right trajectory" The Colonials women's rowing team will open its 2012 season on March 25 at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa.
