GW plays to a 1-1 draw at Towson in exhibition match
Aug. 18, 2006
TOWSON, MD - The George Washington University women's soccer team tied the Towson Tigers 1-1 early Friday evening at the Towson Center Soccer Complex in Maryland. After finishing the first half in a scoreless tie, the two teams exchanged goals during the last 45 minutes. The Colonials struck quickly, scoring one minute into the second half. Red-shirt sophomore Simone Russo (New York, NY/Poly Prep) provided the assist for junior forward Jordan Sweeney (Houston, TX/Cy Fair), who buried the ball in the back of the net, giving the Colonials the 1-0 advantage. The lead held until the 87th minute, when Towson managed to earn the equalizer. Even though the game has no bearings on the standings, Head Coach Tanya Vogel was very pleased with the way her young team played. "I think it's a great step forward for our team," Vogel said. "I was very impressed with the way the younger players performed tonight." Of the 11 players in the starting lineup for the Colonials, eight were either a freshman or a sophomore. Vogel was especially pleased with the performance of freshman defender Elizabeth Hillin (Massapequa, NY/St. Anthony's). Hillin entered the game in second half and made her presence known, sending away a Towson shot as the ball rolled along the goal line. The Colonials open their season on Friday, August 25th, when they travel to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County to face the Retrievers at 7:00 PM. GW's first home game will be on September 6, at 3:00 PM, against Howard University.
