Sept. 2, 2005
Washington, D.C. - Sophomore Jordan Sweeney's (Houston, TX/Cy-Fair) goal (1) in the game's 85th minute broke a 1-1 tie and handed George Washington University (1-2) its first victory of the season as the Colonials defeated Howard (0-2) 2-1 Friday afternoon at Greene Stadium.
Sweeney came off the bench to knock in a corner kick from senior Ina Kain (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge) that proved to be the game winner.
GW made it 1-0 early in the contest when senior Lise Backman (Beaconsfield, Quebec/John Abbott College) notched her first goal of the year with an assist from both Kain and freshman Kerry Philbin (Oak Hill, VA/Bishop Denis O'Connell).
The Bison evened things up at 1-1 right before the end of the first half when Michelle Willston converted one of her four shots on goal with just under five minutes left before the break.
The Colonials pounded Howard goalkeeper Lindsey Walton, out shooting the Bison 21-5. Walton recorded five saves on the day.
Freshman Meg Pyle (Franklin Park, NJ/Mount St. Mary Academy) recorded three of GW's seven shots on goal.
The Colonials return home Sunday to face James Madison at 1:00 pm at the Mount Vernon Field located at 2100 Foxhall Rd., northwest Washington.
