Women's Soccer Wins Inaugural Match at GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex, 4-3

Sept. 4, 2001

Stats

WASHINGTON, DC (September 4, 2001) - Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) scored two goals and sophomore Meggan Eckert (Scottsdale, AZ/ Desert Mountain) broke a 3-3 tie with under 20 minutes remaining in the second half to lead GW to a 4-3 victory over Howard in the inaugural match at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

Warner scored the first-ever goal at the Colonials new home field just under three minutes into the match to give GW an early 1-0 lead. Warner took control of the ball just beyond midfield and dashed down the right side, finishing the play off with a beautiful shot to the top right corner of the net, just beyond the reach of Howard keeper, Tamika Anoia.

After Howard's Erinn Carner tied the score at 1 at the 9:22 mark of the first half, GW answered with a goal by junior Regina Jeffries (Scottsdale, AZ/ West Orange-Stark (TX.)) to regain the advantage.

Warner made it 3-1 after she darted down the right side and beat Anoia to the bottom right corner of the net.

In the second half the Bison stormed back on back-to-back goals by Ranieka Bean. Bean's first goal came at the 55:08 mark of the second half and 15 minutes later she connected again to tie the score at 3.

Five minutes later at the 74:10 mark, Eckert beat Anoia to a free ball just beyond the box and was able to connect into the empty net to put the Colonials up for good, 4-3.

GW returns to the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Friday, Sept. 7, to face another crosstown rival, Georgetown, at 4:00 p.m.
