Second Half Surge Leads Women's Soccer Past Wagner, 3-1 Warner Nets Two More As GW Improves to 2-1 on the Season
STATEN ISLAND, NY (September 9, 2001) - Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) scored two second half goals to lead the Colonials past Wagner College, 3-1, this afternoon, Sept. 9, at the Wagner College Athletic Field. With the win the Colonials improved to 2-1 on the season.
The Colonials jumped out to a 1-0 lead late in the first half as senior Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The Second Team All-Atlantic 10 selection took a pass from Warner on the right side of the box and beat Wagner keeper Dana Honcharuk to the lower left corner of the net to give GW the lead.
Wagner tied the score at 1 early in the second half as freshman Erin Schobert took a cross from junior Tanya Alarcon and beat GW keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) to the lower left corner of the net.
However, Warner would continue her torrid start to the season before it was over. The lightening quick forward scored the winning goal in the 71st minute and then struck again nine minutes later to provide some breathing room for the Colonials. In three matches thus far Warner has scored five goals and added one assist to pace GW with 11 points.
The Colonials have off until Friday, Sept. 14, when they face the Butler Bulldogs beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the opening round of the Naval Academy Tournament in Annapolis, MD.
