WASHINGTON, DC - Three first half freshmen goals, two from Kerry Philbin (Oak Hill, VA/Bishop Denis O'Connell), carried George Washington University (2-3-0) to a 3-0 victory over Saint Francis University (3-1-1) Friday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
Philbin put the Colonials on top 1-0 in the 22nd minute when she tracked down a battered corner kick and converted on a header for her first collegiate goal.
Philbin then produced an almost exact replica of her first goal in the 38th minute, scoring on a header from freshman Lauren Kelly's (Oak Hill, VA/Bishop Denis O'Connell) corner kick to give GW a 2-0 advantage.
A little over a minute later freshman Meghan Pyle (Franklin Park, NJ/Mount St. Mary Academy) notched her first two collegiate points when she received a quick pass from senior Lise Backman (Beaconsfield, Quebec/John Abbott College) five-yards in front of the Red Flash's net and knocked it in for a 3-0 Colonials' lead.
Entering Friday's game SFU had not yet allowed a goal this season. They were held to just five shots in the game.
GW keeper Kelly Paolucci (Lanham, MD/Good Counsel) recorded three saves in the contest before being replaced in the 75th minute by red shirt freshman Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) - her first-ever appearance in a GW uniform.
Red Flash goalie Melanie Stockman made two saves and surrendered all three Colonial goals.
GW beings a four-game stretch away from home as they head to the west coast for matches against San Diego State University, Friday, Sept. 16, and UC Santa Barbara, Sunday, Sept. 18.
