GW Edges Buffalo in Double-Overtime
Sept. 21, 2007
WASHINGTON, DC - Junior midfielder Keara Mehlert (Chevy Chase, MD/Stone Ridge) blasted home a game-winning goal in the 103rd minute as George Washington defeated Buffalo, 2-1, in double-overtime, late Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.
The win, coming in GW's first game played in nearly two weeks, improved their record to 4-2-0 overall, and snapped a two-game losing skid. Buffalo fell to 2-4-1 on the season.
The match was back and forth throughout, as the game length and score would indicate. GW nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 22nd minute, but a shot from Mehlert's found the crossbar instead of the back of the net.
Just 16 minutes later, however, the Colonials managed to take the 1-0 lead. Junior defender Lauren Kelly (Oak Hill, VA/Bishop O'Connell) took a corner kick and sent a high, bending arc into the box, where fellow junior Kerry Philbin (Herndon, VA/Bishop O'Connell) rose to meet the ball in midair and head it down into the right corner of the net, for her first goal of the season.
The slim lead would be short lived, however, as a GW handball in the box gave Buffalo a penalty kick in the 41st minute. The Bulls' Andrea Vescio was denied by Colonial keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) on the initial free kick, but the Buffalo forward followed her shot and pushed it into the right-hand corner before Kern had time to scramble to her feet, leveling the match at one goal apiece.
The contest remained knotted, with neither team able to generate strong scoring chances, as they entered the first of two sudden death, 10-minute overtimes.
In the 97th minute, GW nearly put the game away, but Nicole Trickett's (Eugene, OR/South Eugene) blast from outside the box went flying off the crossbar.
Finally, in the second overtime, Mehlert gathered the ball in the middle of the box, controlled it and then drilled it past the keeper for the golden-goal, after over 102 minutes of play. It was her second goal of the season and her second career game-winner.
GW keeper Kern improved her record to 4-2-0 on the season and recorded five saves as she lowered her GAA to 1.16.
The two teams remained equal in total shots (12), corner kicks (3) and fouls (10).
George Washington continues play at American (6-2-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 3:00 p.m. The Colonials are 7-3-0 all-time against the Eagles.
