Women’s Soccer Edged By Mason, 4-3, in A-10 Opener

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Washington women’s soccer squad fell 4-3 in a hard fought battle to Revolutionary Rival George Mason in the opening match of Atlantic 10 play at George Mason Stadium on Thursday evening.

The Colonials scored within the first 10 minutes of the game to take an early lead, but George Mason was able to tie up the score just three minutes later. The two teams stayed even on the offensive end for the remainder of the first half, trading goals to go into the second with the score deadlocked at three. The GW backline held strong for the majority of the second half, until Mason’s Kayla Hamric scored from 35 yards out to put the Patriots up by one with 20 minutes left on the clock. The Colonials continued to apply offensive pressure, but ultimately came up short, falling 4-3.


  • 9th Minute – Junior midfielder Sofia Pavon got the Colonials on the board early when she took a pass from freshman Natalie Silberman and shot the ball into the upper right hand corner of the net. (GW 1, MASON 0)

  • 13th Minute – The Patriots fought back with a goal of their own three minutes later when Emily Littell took a penalty kick that slipped past the GW defense and into the net. (GW 1, MASON 1)

  • 14th Minute – Pavon provided an energy surge for the Colonials offense a minute later with her second goal of the game and her fifth goal of the season. The Chicago, Illinois, native took a header off of sophomore Deena DeSilva’s pass and found the back of the net to put GW up by one. (GW 2, MASON 1)

  • 15th Minute – The Patriots were able to even the score once again when Abby Downey scored her first goal of the season off of a pass from Emily Littell. (GW 2, MASON 2)

  • 26th Minute – The dynamic duo of senior forward Brittany Cooper and Pavon struck again for the third time this season when Pavon found Cooper in an opening and shot the ball between the pipes from five yards out. (GW 3, MASON 2)

  • 43rd Minute – With two minutes left in the half, Emily Littell tallied her fourth point of the night when she passed the ball to Amanda Nhek, who shot the ball into the lower right corner of the net. (GW 3, MASON 3)

  • 70th Minute – With the score deadlocked at three, the Patriots were able to break through the GW defense when Kayla Hamric found an opening, took a pass from Abby Downey and Emily Littell, and shot the ball into the goal from 35 yards out. (MASON 4, GW 3)


  • Sofia Pavon tallied a single-game career-high five points on two goals and one assist in tonight’s matchup.

  • Brittany Cooper has recorded one goal in each of GW’s last three games and has tallied at least one point in each of the Colonials’ last five matchups.

  • Sophomore defender Deena DeSilva has made an assist in back-to-back games, earing a spot in the scoring column at James Madison and George Mason.

  • Redshirt senior Miranda Horn made three saves against the Patriots and is now only eight shy of passing Christine O’Malley (2000-02) for fourth place on GW’s all-time career saves list.
