Smidinger, Starks score in Colonials' 2-1 Win Over American
GW women's soccer scored twice in the first half to take quick lead
Sept. 22, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half, keeping the American Unviersity Eagles at bay with tough defense to win 2-1, to close out the non-conference section of the 2009 season Tuesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.
On the free kick after an AU foul, freshman Molly Bruh put the ball on the back far goal post for sophomore Sierra Smidinger to head it in past the AU goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou, for her first goal of the season.
After halftime, the Eagles kicked up the pressure on the Colonials, controlling the possession most of the second half. AU's Kristen Piorun kicked in a slow bouncing pass from Jasmine Mohandesi in front of the goal in the 56th minute.
American (4-5-0) took the advantage in shots, 16-11, and corners, 8-5. GW had six shots on goal, with Starks leading the team with three.
The Colonials (3-3-2) open Atlantic 10 Conference play on the road Friday, Sept. 25, at Xavier, before hosting Dayton on Sunday, at Mount Vernon Field at 1 p.m.
