KINGSTON, R.I. -- The George Washington women's soccer team edged Rhode Island, 1-0, to notch its first victory in conference play on Sunday afternoon at the URI Sports Complex.

The teams remained in a scoreless deadlock for the entirety of the first half and into the second, until senior forward Brittany Cooper took a pass from freshman midfielder Alexis Williams and junior midfielder Mia Barreda to put the Colonials up by one at the 55:25 mark.

The Rhode Island front line began to apply the offensive pressure, but the GW defense held strong to secure the shutout victory.


  • 55th Minute -- With the score even at zero, Brittany Cooper netted her fourth goal of the season to break the deadlock. Off of a pass from Alexis Williams and Mia Barreda, Cooper slipped past the Rams backline and shot the ball into the back of the net from the top of the box. (GW 1, URI 0)


  • Redshirt senior goalkeeper Miranda Horn made two saves in today's shutout victory. The Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, native is now five shutouts shy of passing Lora Mozer (1987-90) for first place on GW's all-time career shutouts list.

  • Brittany Cooper has recorded one goal in each of GW's last four games and has tallied at least one point in each of the Colonials' last six matchups.

  • The Colonials held a 6-4 advantage in shots over the Rams, marking the fourth time this season they've outshot their opponent.

  • With today's win, the Buff and Blue even their series history with the Rams at 12-12-2.


    GW will open its conference schedule at home on Thursday, September 28 against Fordham at 4 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
