Women's Soccer Loses Thriller to Richmond in Double Overtime, 3-2

RICHMOND, VA (Sept. 25). - Richmond midfielder Meredith Johnson scored the game-winning goal at the 1:06.37 mark in the second overtime to give the Spiders a 3-2 victory over GW this evening, Sept. 25, at First Market Field. With the loss the Colonials record fell to 2-4 and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10.

Richmond scored the game's first goal at the 11:02 mark of the first half when Jenna Merriam headed in a Molly Rettig pass into the right corner of the net beating GW keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) to put the Spiders ahead, 1-0.

The Colonials answered 14 seconds later when freshman Meghan Cracker (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) took a pass from sophomore Meggan Eckert (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and scored the first goal of her collegiate career on a blast from 10 yards out to tie the score at 1.

GW took the lead at the 26:21 mark when redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) took a corner kick that found senior co-captain Jessica Sultzer (Providence, RI/Barrington) and Sultzer headed it past Richmond keeper Kristen Samuhel for the first goal of her GW career.

Richmond tied score at 2 in the 70th minute on a goal by Molly Rettig. The score remained tied until just under two minutes had elapsed in the second overtime when Johnson, leading a 2-on-2 break, sent a bullet past O'Malley to give the Spiders the win.

The Colonials have off until next Tuesday, Oct. 2, when they return to Richmond to face the Virginia Commonwealth Rams at 7:00 pm.
