Richmond Shuts Out GW, 3-0

Sept. 28, 2002

Box Score

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior forward Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J.) scored twice and added an assist to lead Richmond (4-2-1) to its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season, a 3-0 win over George Washington (3-5-0) on Saturday evening at First Market Stadium.

A scramble in front of the goal led to the Spiders first and eventual game-winning goal. Sophomore Whitney Sikes (Gastonia, N.C.) fed Merriam who shot a bullet into the upper left corner of the box. In the 39th minute, junior Jessica Marino (Poland, Ohio) sped up the right side of the field, firing to senior Meredith Johnson (Raleigh, N.C.). Johnson handed off to classmate Merriam who knocked it in from five yards out to give the home team a 2-0 edge at the break.

The Spiders added extra insurance in the 81st minute when Marino used some fancy footwork to work the ball downfield. She found the top shelf, over GW keeper Kelly Paolucci's out-stretched hands for the Spiders final tally. Junior keeper Megan Cox (Raleigh, N.C.) recorded her second shutout of the season while registering two saves in the contest.

The Spiders are back in action next weekend with a double-dip of conference action. Richmond hosts Duquesne on Friday, October 4 and entertains St. Bonaventure on Sunday, October 5.
