Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to American in the Rain

Sept. 28, 2004

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team (3-4-2) battled American University (8-1-1) through a driving rain storm Tuesday and fell to the Eagles, 1-0, at Mount Vernon.

With less than three minutes remaining in the first half, AU's Marcela Ricupero followed up her blocked shot attempt and tapped it by GW goalkeeper Anna Handzlik (Palos Verdes, CA / Palos Verdes Peninsula) for the game's only goal. Jenna Abbondi assisted on the score for the Eagles.

The weather conditions kept the game sloppy as the Colonials and Eagles struggled offensively to get good looks at the goal.

AU goalkeeper Alison Doyle stopped five shots and earned her second shutout of the year.

GW will host La Salle University at 3:00 pm on Friday at GW's Mount Vernon Field located at 2100 Foxhall Rd., northwest Washington.
