WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer, playing in their first Atlantic 10 Conference match of the season, saw their comeback efforts fall short as Xavier held on for the 2-1 victory late Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field.

The loss, the first for the Colonials (5-3-0, 0-1-0 A-10) at home this season, snaps their two-game win streak. The win improves the Musketeer's record to 2-8-0 overall, and 1-1-0 in league play.

Xavier got on the board first, netting a goal in the 23rd minute of action. Brittany Green dribbled down the right side and crossed the ball into the middle of the box, where teammate Carissa Gilbert was waiting to put the ball in the back of the net. It was Gilbert's first goal of the season and it also marked the first time this year that GW had trailed on their home field.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors into the second half. It was during the second 45-minutes that the Colonials came out and played with an aggression that allowed them to even things at one goal apiece.

During a counter attack, junior Lauren Kelly (Oak Hill, VA/Bishop O'Connell) sent a pass ahead and into the box. It was there that fellow-junior Erica Wright (Cabin John, MD/Walt Whitman/Pittsburgh) corralled the pass and blasted it past the Xavier keeper for the equalizer. It was Wright's team-leading third goal of the season, and second in as many matches.

Unfortunately for the Colonials, they were unable to fight all the way back, and in the 74th minute, Xavier scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. Karin Martini chipped the ball ahead for Carlyanne Wenzel, who settled and then lobbed it over the head of GW keeper Amie Kern (Saylorsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) to make it 2-1.

The loss drops GW's record to 7-12-0 all-time against Xavier, and dating back to last season, it was their fourth straight A-10 defeat.

The Colonials will look to earn their first league win of the season on Sunday, when they travel to Dayton to face the Flyers at 1:00 p.m.
