Women's Soccer Battles to 1-1 Tie Against Saint Joseph's
Oct. 2, 2009
WASHINGTON, DC-- The George Washington University junior Ashley Starks scored the tying goal for the Colonials Friday afternoon against Saint Joseph's at Mount Vernon Field as the teams ended the game in a double overtime tie, 1-1. The Hawks (4-4-3 overall, 1-1-1 Atlantic 10) got on the board as the Colonials tried to clear the ball on a SJU corner kick, scoring the goal by heading it in GW's own goal. Saint Joseph's Maggie Lupinski was credited with the goal. GW's Starks beat the Hawks' goalkeeper Christine Neal, as she came out to defend against the shot. Starks lifted the ball up just enough to go over Neal, following her kick, with a second tap into the goal for her second goal of the season. The game went into overtime knotted at 1-1 and again into a second overtime as neither team could put one in to take the victory. GW's Adriana Moya got a great look at the goal in the first overtime, powering it by two SJU defenders to clank off the post. Sophomore Sierra Smidinger led the Colonials taking five shots with two on goal. The Colonials (3-4-4, 0-1-2) are in action again at Mount Vernon Field, Sunday, Oct. 4, to take on Temple at 1:00 p.m.
