WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington women's soccer team scored twice in the first half and allowed just one shot on goal the entire match in a 2-0 shutout victory over Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Mount Vernon Field Friday afternoon.
GW (5-6-0, 1-2-0 Atlantic 10) snapped a four-match conference winless streak dating back to 2007 in decisive fashion, racing to a two-goal lead and outshooting UMass 7-1 in the first half and 12-8 overall en route to the victory.
After dominating the opening minutes, the Colonials broke through in the 12th minute on senior Erica Wright's second goal of the season. Senior Lauren Kelly settled junior Brittany Eger's throw in and crossed the ball into the 18-yard box to Wright, who turned her defender and poked a shot into the lower left corner for the early lead.
The teams' shared possession throughout the remainder of the first half until GW earned a free kick in its offensive third in the 44th minute. Kelly, the Colonials' go-to free kick taker, drove a cross to the top of the six-yard box where sophomore Cynthia Gamboa shed her mark and headed the ball into the right side. The assist was Kelly's team-leading fourth of the season and moved her into a tie for ninth all-time at GW with 11 career assists.
GW's defense - anchored by Kelly, senior Christy Mazzola, junior Liz Hillin and sophomore Jillian Morgan - contained Massachusetts' attack, namely leading scorer Vanessa Patry, who managed just one shot. Only one of the Minutewomen's eight shots reached target and freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe made the save to earn her third shutout of the season.
