Cadigan, Haft Score in 2-1 Victory over Saint Joseph's
Oct. 3, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC - GW women's soccer played a physical second half and was able to hold their lead over Saint Joseph's, to win 2-1 on Sunday at the Mount Vernon Field. The Colonials improve to 8-3-0, 2-0-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Hawks fall to 3-8-0, 0-2-0. Center midfielder Cara Cadigan put the Colonials on the board first in the 29th minute of game when she blasted a shot from the top of the box into the right corner of the goal, for her second goal of the season. "One of the things that we had to recreate here at home was the culture of winning, the girls have started to do that," said head coach Tanya Vogel. "We talked at halftime about how it was a process and how we had to use today's game to get better because we know we have a formidable opponent coming up on Saturday in Richmond." The Colonials were able to go into halftime with a 1-0 lead over the Hawks. Saint Joseph's upped the intensity in the second half and brought pressure to the middle of the field, sending anything they could up to their forwards. SJU outshot GW in the game, 13-7, with 10 shots in the second half. Freshman forward Claire Haft scored her third goal of the season in the 60th minute of the game to put GW up 2-0. The Malibu, CA, native drove the ball up the field to the near corner to cross the ball back to a sprinting Ashley Starks. Starks settled the ball and pushed it ahead to Haft, who was following her cross, for the goal. "Claire has a gift and that is speed. She did a fantastic job today getting pressure on SJU's backs and also stretching the field," said Vogel. "She does a great job getting forward and making their backs honor that so she stretched the field for us offensively.
"We just couldn't take her off the field in the second half because she did such a fantastic job," said Vogel. Saint Joseph's got on the board in the 79th minute off a Jen Pheiffer goal. She found the ball through the chaos after a corner and put it in the bottom right corner. GW goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe collected seven saves in the win to extend her record to 6-3. The Colonials head to Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 9 for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off. Last season, the Spiders beat the Colonials at the Vern, 2-1. Jillian Morgan scored for GW, heading in a Starks' shot rebound. Jen Ruhe and Emily Dale scored for Richmond, who has a 5-2-1 control over the series record. |
