GW and Rhode Island Play to 1-1 Tie in Women's Soccer
Oct. 8, 2004 KINGSTON, RI - For the second straight game, the George Washington women's soccer team (4-4-4, 2-0-2 A-10) ended up in a 1-1 Atlantic 10 Conference tie as the Colonials and the University of Rhode Island (6-6-1, 3-0-1 A-10) played to a double overtime draw Friday evening at the URI Soccer Complex. After falling behind 1-0 in the game's 36th minute, Colonials' sophomore Sarah Sample (Annapolis, MD / St. Mary's) weaved her way through the Rams defense three minutes later to score her team leading fifth goal of the season unassisted and tie the game 1-1. URI jumped out to its 1-0 lead on senior Kelly McTurk's unassisted score. Colonial goalie Anna Handzlik (Palos Verdes, CA / Palos Verdes Peninsula) recorded a season high 11 saves. The Rams outshot the Colonials 20-8 in the game, including 3-0 in the second overtime. GW's next contest is Sunday when they travel to the University of Massachusetts to face the Minutemen for an A-10 match-up. Game time is 1:00 p.m. -GW-
