Women's Soccer Earns Hard Fought Victory Over Temple, 2-1

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 12, 2001) - Senior Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) scored the game-winning goal with 26 minutes remaining in the second half to lead George Washington to a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Temple Owls this afternoon, Oct. 12, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The victory improves GW's record to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic 10.

The Owls took an early lead as junior Jeanette Hibbs was fouled in the box at the 2:02 mark and then converted the penalty kick for her seventh goal of the season, giving Temple a 1-0 lead.

The Colonials answered three minutes later. Coppedge had control of the ball at the left post and fired a shot at Temple keeper, Jackie Mauro. Mauro looked like she had control, but the ball squirted away from her and junior midfielder Regina Jefferies (Houston, TX/West-Orange Stark) was there to put it away for her second goal of the season.

The score remained tied through halftime and into the early portion of the second half before the Colonials would take the lead for good. Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's), playing despite a pulled leg muscle, gained control of a loose ball on the leftside of the box and served a beautiful pass to Coppedge, who was all alone in the middle and put it past Mauro for her third goal of the season.

GW continued to attack the Owl net, but could not put another goal past Mauro. The Owls settled down and controlled the play at the end of the match, but GW sophomore keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) made some tough saves and the defense held strong to help lead the Colonials to an inspired victory.

The Colonials return to the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex on Sunday, Oct. 14, as they look for their second conference victory against the St. Joseph's Hawks.
