Women's Soccer Blanks St. Joseph's, 2-0 O'Malley Earns First Career Shutout

WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 14, 2001) - Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (N. York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) and senior co-captain Jessica Sultzer (Providence, RI/Barrington) each scored a goal and sophomore goalkeeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) made six saves to post her first career shutout and lead George Washington to 2-0 victory over the St. Joseph's Hawks this afternoon, Oct. 14, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The victory improves GW's record to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks fell to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the Atlantic 10.

Warner gave GW a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on a beautiful shot from beyond the top of the box that found the top right corner of the net, just beyond the reach of St. Joe's keeper, Christy Ganc. It was Warner's team leading seventh goal of the season.

The Colonials extended the lead to 2-0 after gaining control of a loose ball in the box. Senior Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) fed Warner on the left side and then Warner found Sultzer in the middle. Sultzer beat a scrambling Ganc to the lower left corner of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Hawks tried to stage a comeback, but could not solve O'Malley, who made some excellent saves to help preserve the shutout.

The Colonials return to action this Tuesday, Oct. 16, at George Mason. The match with the Patriots begins at 3:00 pm.
