Sarah Sample's Late Goal Saves GW in 1-1 Tie Against Duquesne

Oct. 15, 2004

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC - Trailing 1-0 with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, George Washington (4-5-5, 2-1-3 A-10) junior Ina Kain's (Irvine, CA / Woodbridge) corner kick was knocked into Duquesne University's (7-7-1, 2-3-1 A-10) goal by sophomore Sarah Sample (Annapolis, MD / St. Mary's) to tie the game, as the Colonials pulled out a 1-1 double overtime draw against the Dukes in an Atlantic 10 Conference meeting Friday afternoon at Mount Vernon.

After playing a scoreless first half, GW fell behind 1-0 at the 49th minute mark when DU freshman Kelly Reed put the Dukes ahead with a goal.

Reed initially had her shot attempt blocked by Colonial goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci (Lanham, MD / Good Counsel), but teammate Audra Mathews was able to recover the loose ball and feed it back to Reed who converted it for a score.

The Dukes applied heavy pressure on GW in overtime as DU fired off three shots in each of the overtime periods, with the Colonials getting off none.

Overall, GW was out shot 19-9 in the contest.

Paolucci recorded nine saves in her first start of the year.

The tie is the Colonials' fifth of the season, the most ever in program history.

GW will host St. Bonaventure University at 1:00 pm on Sunday at GW's Mount Vernon Field located at 2100 Foxhall Rd., northwest Washington.

The game will be the Colonials' final home match off the 2004 season.
