Women's Soccer Loses in Double Overtime, 1-0
Xavier Slips By Colonials in Extra Period
Oct. 19, 2003
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Colonials lost their second overtime match this weekend as the visiting Xavier Musketeers upset George Washington, 1-0 in a double overtime shootout.
GW (9-4-2, 3-3-1) and XU (7-7-1, 3-4-0) combined for a 40 shots for the match, as neither team could gain the advantage through regulation and the first overtime period. The Colonials riddled the Musketeers' goal with 21 shots, 10 of which were on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The winning score came in the 104th minute of play when XU's Amber Silvis made a well-placed pass that split the GW's defense up the middle of the field. The Musketeers' leading scorer, Lauren Giesting, received the pass and placed a low shot under a diving Anna Handzlik who charged out of the goal in an attempt to intercept the serve into the box by Silvis.
The Colonials continue their homestand next weekend when they host Saint Joseph's in a 3:00 pm match at Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex.
