WASHINGTON, DC - Freshman Kerry Philbin's (Oak Hill, VA, Bishop O'Connell) goal (4) in the 41st minute broke a scoreless tie and resulted as the game-winner as George Washington University (5-9-0, 2-4-0 A-10) defeated the University of Massachusetts (5-9-0, 2-4-0 A-10) 1-0 in an Atlantic 10 match Friday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
Playing throughout a heavy rain mist, freshman Keara Mehlert (Chevy Chase, MD/Stone Ridge) set up GW's score with a cross that Philbin converted on a header two yards in front of the Minutewomen's net.
With the goal, Philbin now stands as the Colonials' goals and points (9) leader.
UMass took five shots on goal in the contest but was denied each time by Colonial senior goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci (Lanham, MD/Good Counsel), who notched her second shutout of the year and improved her record to 5-3-0 between the pipes.
Goalie Kristen Walker also recorded five saves in the loss for the Minutewomen.
With only six available Atlantic 10 Tournament spots and three conference matches remaining, GW needs to win out to maintain a chance of earning a bid.
GW's final home match of the year is set for Sunday against the University of Rhode Island at Mount Vernon. Game time is 1:00 PM.
A brief ceremony honoring the team's seven seniors will precede the game.
