Xavier Hands GW 2-0 Loss in Women's Soccer

Oct. 22, 2004

Final Stats

Cincinnati, OH - George Washington University (5-6-5, 3-2-3 A-10) suffered a 2-0 defeat Friday night to Atlantic 10 opponent Xavier University (5-10-1, 4-3-1 A-10) at Schmidt Fieldhouse.

After playing a scoreless first half, the Musketeers scored in the 63rd minute and again in the 81st minute to seal the win.

Sophomore Amber Silvis received a pass from junior Laura Merkel right near GW's goalpost and sent it into the net to put Xavier up 1-0.

The Musketeers sent the contest out of reach with a little more than eight minutes remaining in regulation when Silvis came through again for Xavier. She fired off a shot attempt that bounced off Colonial goalie Anna Handzlik (Palos Verdes, CA / Palos Verdes) and was recovered by senior Lauren Giesting who promptly knocked it in for a goal to set the score at 2-0.

After missing two games due to injury, Handzlik returned in net for the Colonials and stopped six shots overall in the match. Musketeer goalkeeper Andrea Garber recorded three saves in her third shutout of the season.

Sophomore Sarah Sample (Annapolis, MD / St. Mary's) got off two of GW's three shots on goal.

The Colonials are back in action on the road Sunday afternoon against the University of Dayton in another conference showdown. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
