Women's Soccer Closes Out Home Schedule With 2-1 Loss To URI

Oct. 23, 2005

Final Stats

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's soccer team (5-10-0, 2-5-0 A-10) concluded its 2005 home schedule Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 defeat by the University of Rhode Island (10-4-1, 6-0-0 A-10) at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

The Colonials took a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the game but the Rams answered right back in two minutes with a goal.

URI then knocked in the game-winner about seven minutes later to take a 2-1 advantage that stood for the rest of the match.

Junior Shari Taylor (Fort Washington, MD/Bishop McNamara) produced GW's goal (4) when she converted a pass from freshman Keara Mehlert (Chevy Chase, MD/Stone Ridge School) at the 12:07 mark.

Rams' sophomore Debra Nelson tied the game 1-1 at the 14:24 mark when she lifted a kick from 15-yards in front of the Colonials' net that just sailed over the reach of goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci (Lanham, MD/Good Counsel).

URI made it 2-1 at the 21:48 mark when junior Aimee Lambert scored her first goal of the season unassisted.

Rams' goalie Ria Carroll recorded seven saves in the win.

GW honored its nine seniors in a pre game ceremony that recognized Paolucci, Lise Backman (Beaconsfield, Quebec/John Abbott College), Nicole Cavino (Rye, NY/Rye), Erynn Clapp (Lima, NY/Monroe Community College), Audrey Ehrhorn (Kailua, HI/Iolani), Anna Handzlik (Palos Verdes, CA/Palos Verdes Peninsula), Ina Kain (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge), Rebecca Schumer (Baltimore, MD/Pikesville) and Ashley Squires (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy).

The Colonials, eliminated from postseason contention, play their final two games of the season on Friday, Oct. 28, at Saint Louis and Sunday, Oct. 30, at Duquesne.
