Women's Soccer Playoff Hopes Take Hit With 2-1 Loss At Richmond
Oct. 24, 2008
RICHMOND, VA - The George Washington women's soccer team surrendered two goals within five minutes of the start of the second half and dropped a 2-0 decision at Richmond Friday evening, dimming the Colonials' chances at an Atlantic 10 Championship berth. Following a scoreless first half, Richmond (10-6-1, 4-5-0 A-10) netted the match's first goal just 26 seconds into the second half on Jessie Wolfe's hard shot to the center of goal with assists from Jen Ruhe and Sarah Hilt. The Spiders struck again less than five minutes later on Kat Russell's strike to the right side of goal past Colonials' freshman goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe. Rowe finished with five saves on 16 shots faced, upping her league-leading total to 95 on the season. GW (7-10-0, 3-6-0 A-10) senior Kerry Philbin scored her second goal of the season with 13 seconds remaining, finishing a rebound of her initial shot saved by Melissa Pacheco, who made seven stops on 16 shots faced. Philbin and senior Keara Mehlert led the Colonials' attack with three shots apiece. GW faces must-win situations in each of its final two regular-season matches next weekend to keep its hopes of an A-10 Championship bid intact. The Colonials travel to Saint Joseph's next Friday, Oct. 31, and Temple Sunday, Nov. 2, to round out conference play.
