Nov. 1, 2009
KINGSTON, RI - The George Washington women's soccer team came from behind to finish the 2009 season with a win over Rhode Island, 2-1, Sunday afternoon, when senior Brittany Eger beat the URI goalkeeper one-on-one for the game-winner. The teams went into the locker rooms at the half knotted at zeros, but it was the Rams that scored first in the second half. URI's Alexis Veith scored on a shot from 20 yards out on the left side in the 53rd minute. Almost five minutes later, Jillian Morgan tied the game with a shot from the top of the box for her second goal of the season. After Eger's goal to take the lead for the Colonials, the Rams took five more shots to try to force overtime, but Colonials goalkeeper Lindsey Rowe didn't allow them to score. Rowe collected seven saves against the Rams to finish the season at 84 saves and .785 save percent. Eger finished the season with a team-high five goals on 28 shots, with three game-winning goals for team-high 10 points. The Rams (6-12-1, 4-7 A-10) out shot the Colonials (7-8-4, 4-5-2,) 15-6, with twice as many as GW's four shots on goal.
Despite Sunday's victory, the Colonials' season total of 14 points fell just short of qualifying for the six-team A-10 Championship Tournament next weekend at Transamerica Field in Charlotte, NC.
