WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University women's soccer team has signed five student-athletes to national letters-of-intent for the 2002 season, head coach Tanya Vogel has announced. The five recruits looking to make an early impact for the "buff and blue" are Nicole Cavino (Rye, NY/Rye), Audrey Ehrhorn (Kailua, Hawaii/Iolani School), Ina Kain (Irvine, CA/Woodbridge), Kelly Paolucci (Lanham, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel), and Ashley Squires (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy).
"Everyone here at the University is extremely excited about this years incoming class," said coach Vogel, who is entering her third year as head coach. "There is a wealth of talent in this upcoming class that should be able to step right in to our program and make an immediate impact. Combined with the core group of talent that is already here at GW, we are looking forward to making a strong run at the A-10 tournament."
Cavino, a forward/midfielder, has been a member of the New York State Olympic Development Team since 2000 and a Region I Pool member in '00 & '01. She was a team captain for the Hudson Valley Division as a representative in the Empire State Games. A standout player and captain for Rye High School in New York, she also lettered in field hockey and track. In her four years of varsity soccer, she managed to tally an impressive 48 goals and 65 assists. Her accolades in soccer include All-Section, All-League and the Journal News All-Star Team.
"Nicole's athleticism and versatility will add a lot to our program," according to Coach Vogel. "She is strong and fast with a nose for the goal and will certainly be a force offensively for our squad."
Ehrhorn, a defensive midfield/defender, has been a member of the Olympic Development State Teams in Hawaii since 1998. As a member of the 2001 U-18 State Champion Honolulu Bulls Soccer Club she helped guide her team to a Snickers Cup Championship in that same year.

Kain, a true center midfielder, was a member of the U-15 Olympic Development Program National Team in 1999. In subsequent years she was a member of the Regional team as well as a participant in the U.S. National All-Star Team International Competition (Texas, 2000). She is a standout player for the Southern California Blues Soccer Club, helping them to capture one U.S. National Championship (Florida, 2000), back-to-back U.S. Western Regional Championships (2001 & 2000), back-to-back Cal-South State Championships (2001 & 2000), back-to-back Premier Coast Soccer League Championships (2000 & 1999) and many strong tournament performances including Surf Cup U-18 finalists in 2001.
"Ina is an extremely intelligent midfielder," said Coach Vogel. "She has the ability to control the midfield and establish a creative attack. Her strength, speed and ball handling capabilities are attributes that are sure to enhance our program. We are extremely excited to add her expertise to our team."
Paolucci, a 5'10" goalkeeper, was an NSCAA Academic All-American, All-State and team captain from Good Counsel High School in Wheaton, MD. She has anchored her team defensively in route to their fourth consecutive WCAC Championship. In addition, she has been selected to the First Team WCAC and First Team All-Montgomery County for three consecutive years.
"Kelly has a terrific presence in goal," according to Goalkeeping Coach Colin Lennon. "Her stature and athletic ability are attributes that every coach looks for in a goalkeeper. She knows what it takes to win, and that's an attitude that she will instill in our program. We're looking for Kelly to make an immediate impact on our team."
Squires, a midfielder/forward, was an outstanding player from Our Lady of Mercy High School in Rochester, NY. She was a four-year letter winner and two year captain at Mercy where they were 2001 Section V Champions and State runner-up. Squires also captained the New York West Empire State Games team to Gold Medal in 2001. In addition, she was a member of the Rochester Jr. Rhinos Soccer Club, the New York State Olympic Development Team for six years and attended Region I Training Camp for five years.
"Ashley is a warrior on the field," according to Coach Vogel. "She demands respect and plays with a fiery intensity. Combined with her athleticism and technical ability she can play anywhere on the field." Coach Vogel and Lennon are extremely excited to have an incoming player from their hometown.
Additionally, the Colonials are returning several starters for the 2002 season led by junior Kim Warner. Warner (eight goals and four assists in 2001) is a member of the Canadian National Team and an A-10 All-Conference Performer, who offers a high paced attacking style and mentality. Alongside Warner are Meghan Cracker and Colleen Ragan, who both offer a keen offensive prowess. Newcomer Paolucci will be fighting it out with veteran goalkeepers Christine O'Malley and Jamie Olson. Also returning are backs Kelly Lawten, Lindsay Bruno, Molly Sunderdick and Caite Terranova; midfielders Meggan Eckert, Sarah Minnich, Sydney McCall, Kim Sanders, Kesha Christoph and Amanda Bednarz. All players had seen significant time during the 2001 inaugural season at the Mt. Vernon Campus. The incoming class will be working hard to establish themselves in next year's lineup. 2002 looks to be a very exciting season as the team sets their eyes on an A-10 Championship.
