GW Women's Soccer Welcomes Delaware for Friday Exhibition Game
Colonials Host Blue Hens in Final Preseason Match
Aug 15, 2013
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's soccer welcomes Delaware to the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Friday for a 6 p.m. exhibition contest.
It is the Colonials' final exhibition match of the 2013 preseason before kicking off the regular season at District foe American on Friday, Aug. 23 at 4 p.m. Last season GW defeated Delaware, 1-0, at home in its lone preseason game.
Following just four days of preseason training, GW shut out VMI, 4-0, on Sunday at home in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Colonials scored a pair of goals in each half while putting on a commanding offensive performance, outshooting the Keydets, 37-1. Senior defender Jane Wallis netted two goals while junior midfielder Nicole Belfonti and sophomore forward Kristi Abbate each scored once.
GW returns 22 letterwinners and seven starters from the 2012 roster and welcomes 11 freshmen. Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Sarah Barnes, the Buff and Blue look to improve upon last year's 5-12-1 overall record and 1-8-0 A-10 mark.
Delaware comes to the GW Soccer Field following a 2-0 exhibition loss at La Salle on Tuesday. The Blue Hens went 9-8-1 overall and 6-4-0 in CAA action in 2012, and qualified for the conference championship for the second straight season. Senior Chelsea Duffy, who scored twice and tallied an assists last year, and junior Allegra Gray were both named to the All-Colonials Athletic Association Preseason Team. Delaware returns 14 letterwinners and four starters in addition to welcoming three newcomers.
