Women's Soccer Set for Opening Weekend
Colonials kick off 2017 on Friday
Update: The season opener against Delaware has been cancelled due to poor weather in the area.
KICKING OFF: The George Washington women's soccer squad opens the 2017 season on Friday at 5 p.m. at Delaware before visiting crosstown foe and last year's College Cup Semifinalist Georgetown for a 1 p.m. clash on Sunday.
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Redshirt senior Miranda Horn returns for the Colonials after posting an overall 0.65 goals-against average (GAA) to lead the conference a year ago, while adding an impressive 0.889 save percentage in A-10 play en route to earning a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. The Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, native was selected as a member of the 2017 A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team for the third consecutive season.
FORWARD OUT FRONT: Senior Brittany Cooper looks to lead the offense this season after a career year in 2016 that saw the forward tally four goals and two assists. The Montclair, New Jersey, native started all 21 games for the Colonials and scored the golden goal against Duquesne in double overtime of the A-10 Championship quarterfinal to give GW a 2-1 victory.
BACK IN ACTION: Junior Sofia Pavon returns to the line up after missing the entirety of last season due to injury. The 2015 A-10 Rookie of the Year and midfield standout was selected as a member of the 2017 A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team after posting six goals and one assist in her freshman campaign.
FRESH START: The Colonials add depth to their roster for 2017 with 12 newcomers joining the squad. Despite graduating nine seniors in the spring, the Buff and Blue return five starters from last year's squad that posted an overall 11-7-3 record.
DEPTH IN DEFENSE: After allowing the fewest goals (17) in the Atlantic 10 and sitting atop the league standings for the third straight season with a 0.77 GAA, the Colonials return a strong back line that features redshirt junior Annika Johnson, sophomore Olivia Di Cristofaro, redshirt sophomore Megan McCormick, and junior Dani Frese. Freshman Allie Nornes is also slated to have an immediate impact on the Colonials' defense.
SCOUTING DELAWARE: The Blue Hens start the 2017 season projected to finish eighth in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Delaware returns nine players from last year's team including projected starting goalie Kailyn Rekos and midfielder Dani Kabat. Rekos led the CAA in saves per game (6.11) a season ago, while Kabat scored three goals and was named to the CAA All-Rookie Team.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN: The Hoyas were selected as the preseason favorite to win the BIG EAST Conference for 2017. Georgetown returns a strong core of players from last season, including BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Rachel Corboz, who was named a First Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches and led the country with 16 assists in 2016.
LOOK AHEAD: The Colonials return for their home opener on Thursday, August 24 to take on the Liberty Flames at 5 p.m at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
