Women's Soccer Set for Home Opener on Thursday
Colonials take on Liberty Flames at 5 p.m.
KICKING OFF The George Washington women's soccer team will host Liberty for its home opener on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
LAST TIME OUT: The Colonials fell to No. 5 Georgetown, 4-0, in its season opener at Shaw Field on Sunday afternoon. GW tallied five shots on the day but could not find the back of the net as four, second-half goals by the Hoyas made the difference in the crosstown rivalry matchup.
POWER FROM PAVON: Junior midfielder Sofia Pavon finished her freshman season on a high note, posting six goals and one assist en route to earning 2015 A-10 Rookie of the Year accolades. After sitting out the entirety of last season due to injury, the 2017 A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team member tallied two shots against Georgetown to start the 2017 season.
FRESHMEN ON THE FRONT LINE: Freshmen Allie Nornes and Alexis Williams both earned starts in their collegiate debut. Nornes is slated to have an immediate impact on the back line, while Williams is expected to be an offensive threat on the other side of the ball.
SCOUTING LIBERTY: Seeking to defend their Big South title in 2017, the Flames opened their season in a 1-1 tie on the road against Wagner College on Friday before dropping their home opener, 2-0, to VCU on Sunday. Liberty was in an even battle with the Rams for the majority of the game, but a late goal on a penalty kick sparked a 2-0 win for VCU.
LAST WE MET: The Colonials fell to the Flames, 2-0, on the road last season, snapping their regular-season win streak at 19 consecutive victories. Liberty holds a 3-2 edge in the series history.
LOOK AHEAD: The Buff and Blue return to action on Thursday, August 31st at 5 p.m. to host LSU at the GW Soccer Field. Thursday's match will also feature a free cookout and games as part of Kickin' It at the Vern. Food will be served at game start and is limited to the first 200 fans.
