GERMANTOWN, MD - The George Washington University women's soccer team dropped its only preseason game of the year 4-0 Sunday night against the University of Maryland at the Germantown Soccer Complex.
The contest remained scoreless until the 56th minute when Maryland junior midfielder Mallory Mahar controlled a cross pass from freshman forward Carissa Gilbert and scored the first of her two goals to put the Terps up 1-0.
Maryland made it 2-0 in the second of the scrimmage's three 30-minute periods when Mahar drilled a header into the net at the 69th minute mark.
The Terps followed with a team goal less than seven minutes later when Mahar fired a cross in front of the Colonials' net which bounced off a GW defender and fell inside the far post, putting Maryland up 3-0.
Two minutes and nine seconds later (76:39) junior forward Simone Dekker found the back of the net to tally the Terps' third goal in less than eight minutes. The goal was keyed by senior midfielder Lindsay Niehaus's pass from 35 yards out, which Dekker controlled and put into the Colonials goal. The score put the Terps up by the final 4-0 margin.
GW junior goalkeeper Anna Handzlik (Palos Verdes, CA / Palos Verdes Peninsula) recorded four saves and allowed one goal in 66 minutes in net.
The Colonials were outshot 27-3 in the game.
GW opens up regular season play on Friday when they travel to Richmond, VA to face Virginia Commonwealth University. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
