WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer freshman forward Sarah Sample (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) received Co-Rookie of the Week honors, the Atlantic 10 has announced. Sample helped lead the Colonials to a 4-0 opening day victory with a goal and an assist against Toledo on August 31.
Sample earned three points in an impressive first collegiate contest. At the 72:00 mark she assisted senior Kim Warner (North York, Ontario/St. Joseph's) for GW's third goal, Warner's second. Sample then finished the scoring with an unassisted goal in the closing minutes of play. The freshman also led all players with five shots, four of which were on goal.
Sample, a native of nearby Annapolis, MD, had previously been named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Rookie Team. Sample is the cornerstone of an incoming freshman class that was ranked #15 in the region by Soccer Buzz Magazine. The Colonials were picked to finish fourth in the A-10 preseason poll. The team finished fourth in 2002 and advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 1998.
The Colonials (1-0-0) play again on Friday at 2:00 pm when they face VCU at the Georgetown Tournament. GW also plays on Sunday at 2:30 pm against host Georgetown.
