Warner Named A-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sept. 23, 2003 WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington women's soccer senior forward Kim Warner (North York, Ontario/St. Joseph's) received Player of the Week honors, the Atlantic 10 has announced. Warner scored all three of GW's goals in two victories this week over Howard and Towson. Warner's league-leading seven goals have helped the Colonials to a 5-1-1 record, their best start in the program's 24-year history. Warner, last year's Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year is now leading the A-10 with seven goals and 15 points. The fifth-year senior is averaging a goal a game with seven in the team's first seven matches. Three of her goals, including two this week, were game-winners. Warner has emerged as one of the Colonials' premier players in history. She has 79 points and 35 goals in her illustrious career which is third all-time at GW. With nine career assists, she needs just one more to make GW's all-time Top Ten list in that category. Warner scored two goals and had nine shots against Howard on Wednesday, September 17. Warner scored in the opening minutes of both periods in GW's 2-1 victory. Warner scored 1:16 into the match after receiving a pass from freshman Sarah Sample (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) setting up a breakaway goal to put GW ahead early. Warner then scored 1:39 into the second half beating two defenders and the keeper after a pass for an assist from Meggan Eckert (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain). GW won versus Towson on Sunday, September 21 courtesy of an incredible last-second goal from Warner. She found the net with 10 seconds left in what had been a scoreless draw. Warner collected a rebound off of a late corner kick and looped a precision shot over the keeper's head. The goal was the 12th game-winning goal in Warner glowing career.
Warner's clutch goal at home extended GW's unbeaten streak at Mount Vernon Soccer Field to 9 consecutive matches dating back to October 26, 2001. The Colonials have also posted a perfect 4-0 record as the away team this season. GW, riding a five-game unbeaten streak is currently ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Colonials will open Atlantic 10 play hosting Richmond on Friday September 26, at 4:00 pm.
