CHAPEL HILL, NC - After defeating the NC Central Eagles with a program record 22 runs Saturday, the George Washington Colonials shut out the Eagles, 15-0, in the Consolation game of the 2008 Carolina Classic Sunday morning.

Senior Jackie Yaniga, junior Tori Sensi, and redshirt sophomore Elisa Van Kirk all drove in three runs for GW. Sophomore pitcher Amanda Gabriel was nearly perfect, allowing just one hit in four innings of work, striking out seven.

George Washington took a seven run lead after its bottom half of the first. Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis led off the game with a double and was brought in by a single to left by Sensi. Sensi advanced to second on the play and was then drove in by the next batter, freshman Katie Terrazas, on a single to right. With two outs, Yaniga tripled to right, allowing Terrazas to score from first, making the score 3-0. Sophomore Carrie Higdon followed with a single up the middle to score Yaniga. Higdon then stole second and Van Kirk reached on throwing error, scoring Higdon from second. Eagles pitcher Kri Schooler then walked Gabriel and Halkiotis, loading the bases for Sensi. Sensi then delivered with a two-run single up the middle, extending the lead to 7-0.

Senior Katie Miller and Yaniga got the second inning started with a one-out singles through the left side. After Higdon reached on a fielders choice, Van Kirk crushed a three-run homer to left center to extend the lead to 10.

 

 

The Colonials would tack on four more runs in third with a two-run double by Yaniga, and a pair of RBI singles by Miller and Higdon.

Terrazas doubled in the fourth to score Gabriel for the final run of the game.

Gabriel (1-2) allowed the first batter she faced to single for the Eagles' only hit of the game. After the first base knock, the right-hander retired the next 12 batters she faced. Higdon came into the game in the fifth and retired the side.

Terrazas and Yaniga both recorded three-hits in the Classic finale, while Terrazas and Higdon also collected 2 RBIs. Sensi, Miller and Higdon also had two hits apiece.

GW (2-3) is off for the next 16 days before returning to action Tuesday, Feb. 26 for a doubleheader at UMBC. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. On Feb. 27, the Colonials will host the Towson Tigers in a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
