CONWAY, S.C. – On the second day of the Kickin’ Chicken Classic, the George Washington softball team dropped back-to-back contests to Marshall and host Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, the Colonials (0-4) fell to the Thundering Herd (3-0) by a narrow 4-2 score that was determined in the final inning of the contest.

Marshall held a 1-0 lead nearly the entire game until freshman Samantha Dos Santos singled in two runs in the top of the seventh to give GW a 2-1 advantage, but the Herd fired back in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run for the victory.

Unbeaten Marshall got on the board in the first inning when Alysia Hively singled to right field and sent home Emileigh Cooper.

Action remained scoreless until the top of the seventh, when GW senior Lauren Wilson was hit by a pitch and took first base, then advanced to second on a hit by sophomore Chelsea Lenhart. A sacrifice fly by freshman Victoria Valos advanced the runners to second and third, and the two eventually touched home on Dos Santos’ single up the middle to give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Marshall’s Amanda Lara singled and stole second, and Alianna Telles walked to set the stage for Rebecca Gamby, who slammed a walk-off home run to left-center field to give the Herd the one-run victory.

Sophomore Courtney Martin took her first loss of the season, striking out three batters and allowing 10 hits.

GW then dropped a 7-4 decision to Coastal Carolina in the finale. With the score knotted at four heading into the top of the seventh, the Chanticleers used a three-run inning to regain the lead and defeat the Colonials.

The Buff and Blue jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Wilson stole second base after being walked and was sent home on junior Autumn Taylor’s double to center field.

Coastal Carolina answered in the top of the second on a Kory Hayden run, then added three more in the third.

After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, GW responded to CCU’s three-run third with three of its own in the bottom of the sixth. With Valos and Lenhart on first and second, Taylor slammed her second home run in as many days to knot the score at four.

But Coastal Carolina added three more runs in the top of the seventh and GW could not answer.

Senior Kara Clauss took the loss after pitching five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.

GW wraps up the Kickin’ Chicken Classic on Sunday, Feb. 12, with a 10 a.m. contest against George Mason. Fans can follow live stats for the games by checking the GW softball schedule.
