Colonials Next Head to UNCG Spartan Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. - The George Washington softball team concluded the LSU Tiger Invitational with a 9-1 five-inning loss to Penn State on Sunday morning at Tiger Park.
The Nittany Lions (4-2) led 6-0 after two innings thanks to a two-run double by Kasie Hatfield in the first and four hits in the second, including a two-run single by Macy Jones with two outs. After a scoreless third, Penn State added a single run in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before GW (0-10) got on the board.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, freshman Madi Myers-Cook doubled to left-center field and sophomore Meghan Rico singled up the middle to bring home the Colonials' only run of the game, and Penn State scored twice more in the bottom of the inning for the 9-1 win.
Senior Courtney Martin (0-7) took the loss after allowing three runs on three hits and six walks in two-thirds of an inning. Rico tossed the final 3.2 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on five hits and nine walks while striking out three. Marlaina Laubach (3-0) was charged with one run on four hits in the complete game win.
The Colonials return to action next weekend at the UNCG Spartan Classic in Greensboro, N.C., where they will face No. 22/24 Minnesota, Army, Hampton and host UNC Greensboro Feb. 21-23.
