CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore Victoria Valos gave the George Washington softball team an early lead, but Iona scored five unanswered run over the final three innings to defeat the Colonials, 5-1, on the second day of the Carolina Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina.

Valos knocked in junior Chelsea Lenhart with a one-out double to center in the bottom of the first inning to give GW (2-6) an early 1-0 lead. Lenhart led off the frame with a single and moved to second on senior Julie Orlandi's sacrifice bunt.

Junior starter Courtney Martin cruised through the first four innings for the Colonials, retiring the first seven batters she faced, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The Gaels loaded the bases with one out and, after a strikeout, second baseman Allison Hand walked to tie the game. Right fielder Eileen McCann then doubled to center to drive in two more and give Iona a 3-1 lead.

Iona added single runs in the sixth and seventh on an RBI double by pitcher Carly Argyle and another two-out bases loaded walk by shortstop Brianna Schauer.

Martin (1-3) took the loss for GW after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in 5.2 innings of work. Argyle surrendered one run on five hits and four walks in the complete game win for Iona. She struck out six GW batters.

Five different players accounted for the Colonials' five hits in the game, while McCann and Schauer led the Gaels with 2-for-3 efforts.

The Colonials conclude the Carolina Classic on Saturday against Iowa State at 9:30 a.m., and Penn State at 12 p.m.
