MACON, GA - Caroline Howe went 4-5, driving in three runs with a home run, a double and three runs scored to help George Washington (3-1) split their games in the second day of the Mercer Classic. The Colonials defeated Mercer 16-1 in their second game of the day but were shut out earlier by Austin Peay, 10-0.
Howe got GW on the board quickly in the first inning with a two-run homerun and the Colonials never trailed the rest of the game.
After Mercer cut the lead in half in their part of the first, George Washington sent 14 batters to the plate to score a program-record 10 runs on nine hits in the top of the second. The Colonials went scoreless in the third inning but scored two each in the fourth and fifth to take a 15 run lead. The Bears could not muster another run and the game was called in the fifth due to the eight-run rule.
Katie Miller (1-1) avenged her loss earlier in the day to get the win. Miller went the final three innings in relief of Amanda Gabriel allowing just two hits and striking out two. Katie also helped her cause going 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the second game.
Nikki Brooks and Colleen Kegler also had two hits a piece combining for four RBI's. Elana Meyers drove in three runs for the Colonials against Mercer with a double and a sacrifice fly.
The Colonials will play in the championship game of the Mercer Classic when they take on Oakland tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
