WASHINGTON DC - The George Washington University softball team swept the UMBC Retrievers in its season opening double header at the Mt. Vernon Softball Field Tuesday, 2-0 in game one and 10-7 in game two, to improve to 2-4 on the season. UMBC fell to 1-6 in regular season play.

In game one, junior Amanda Gabriel held the Retrievers scoreless and held them to only five hits and collected 10 strikeouts to improve her pitching record to 1-2 early in the 2009 season.

In the second inning, freshman Lauren Wilson led off the inning with a walk and advanced on a Tori Sensi sacrifice bunt. Gabriel next earned a base on balls, to be followed two batters later by Amanda Holst with another walk to have the bases loaded for freshman Jordyn O'Donnell. O'Donnell hit two runs in on a single.

Game two saw a flurry of runs scored for the Colonials to back up the effort in the circle by freshman Kara Clauss. Clauss earned her first win as a Colonial throwing a complete game, allowing nine hits, dishing out four walks and striking out five.

After scoring one run in the first inning, in the bottom of the fifth inning GW was down five to one before they fired off eight un-answered runs to go up 10-5.

Holst and O'Donnell started off the fifth with balk-to-back walks followed by freshman Krissy Mackiewicz getting on base after being hit by a pitch to load the bases for senior Carrie Higdon. Higdon hit a well placed single past UMBC's shortstop to score Holst. Sophomore Katie Terrazas hit a double to clear the bases for the Colonials.

In the sixth inning, the Colonials started off with a walk to Elisa Van Kirk. Holst followed with a single to push pinch runner Heidi Penna up a base before an error by UMBC's pitcher allowed O'Donnell on to score Penna from second and push Holst to third. O'Donnell stole second early in Mackiewicz's at-bat and Holst scored and O'Donnell moved to third after Mackiewicz hit a single. Higdon game up big again for the second inning to score one run on a double. Sensi followed with a double of her own to score Higdon.

The softball team plays on the road this weekend at Virginia, Feb. 28 and Mar. 1, with both games set to start at 1:00 p.m.
