COLUMBIA, S.C. – Elon strung together four runs in the first two innings and the George Washington softball team could not recover as the Colonials fell to the Phoenix, 4-1, in their first game of the Gamecock Invitational at South Carolina.

GW (0-5) held Elon (6-2) scoreless for five consecutive innings and added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Buff and Blue struggled to connect and answer the Phoenix’s opening runs.

Senior pitcher Kara Clauss struck out three batters and allowed just six hits, all of which came in the first four innings.

Senior Lauren Wilson scored GW’s lone run off a single by freshman Victoria Valos. Wilson was walked to first and reached second on a throwing error. She was sent home when Valos singled to center field for the first RBI of her career.

The Colonials return to action on Sunday with back-to-back contests to wrap up the Gamecock Invitational. GW faces host South Carolina at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. rescheduled game with Appalachian State.
