WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team had its hands full battling Manhattan in the championship game of the GW Challenge Tournament on Sunday at Mount Vernon Softball Field, and that's not even taking into account the frigid, blustery weather conditions it had to endure as well. In the end, the Lady Jaspers came from behind to prevail 11-10 to win the tournament title. The Colonials were led by sophomore Caroline Howe's (Los Alamitos, CA) three hits and junior Elana Meyers' (Douglasville, GA) three RBI.
Manhattan defeated Mount St. Mary's, 13-5, in the final round-robin game of the tournament in the first contest of the day to earn a spot in the championship game against GW. The Colonials (2-2) defeated Army and Mount St. Mary's on Friday to clinch their spot.
GW had its offense clicking in the early going as it struck first with three runs in the second. The Colonials loaded the bases with one out and a fielder's choice from sophomore Gabby Culp (Desoto, TX) brought the first run home as Howe beat the throw to the plate. An RBI single from sophomore Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) and a sacrifice fly from Meyers capped the scoring in the frame.
With the Colonials clinging to a one-run lead at 3-2 heading into the third, GW put up seven runs in the frame to take a 10-2 advantage. The inning was highlighted by six hits including RBI singles from Howe and sophomore Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD), and a two-run double off the bat of Meyers.
Manhattan scored four runs over the next two innings to close the margin to 10-6, but a five-run sixth inning gave the Lady Jaspers an 11-10 advantage.

Howe led off the seventh with a single to start GW's rally, but was stranded at third base. She finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Meyers went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run. Junior Kaity Harbour (Macomb, MI) chipped in with a pair of singles.
GW (2-2) returns to the field when it takes on cross-town rival Georgetown in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Softball Field.
