COLUMBIA, S.C. - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to South Carolina and Appalachian State to close out the Gamecock Invitational at Beckham Field on Sunday.

In game one, the Colonials (0-7) held on to a two-run lead from the bottom of the first through the end of four, but South Carolina (10-3) tallied three runs in the top of the fifth and added another in the sixth to defeat the Buff and Blue, 4-2.

A Lauren Wilson single to left field and an Autumn Taylor two-run home run to left put GW up 2-0 in the first inning, but the squad was able to hold on to the advantage.

South Carolina put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth off a RBI double to center field and a RBI single down the left line to put the tournament host ahead, 3-2. The Gamecocks added a run in the sixth to secure the 4-2 comeback victory.

Junior Sandi Moynihan recorded a team-high seven putouts for the Colonials. Senior pitcher Kara Clauss was saddled with the loss.

In the finale, Taylor registered her fourth home run of the year, and second of the day, but it was not enough for GW to overcome Appalachian State (5-5), as the squad fell, 8-2.

The Mountaineers opened the bottom of the first inning with five runs off of six hits to take an early lead. They added three more tallies off of four hits in the second to extend the lead to eight.

In the bottom of the second, after freshman Samantha Dos Santos walked, Taylor homered to left centerfield for her eighth and ninth RBIs of the season.  Junior Tara Fogarty and sophomore Alexandra Del Prete then fired off consecutive singles, but pair was left stranded.

Sophomore Courtney Martin took the loss in game two. Senior Heidi Penna made her first appearance of the season on the mound, striking out one and allowing two runs and three hits. Freshman Chelsey Pedley allowed one run and four hits in 4.2 innings while striking out three.

GW returns to action when the Colonials host their home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 29 against Drexel. Game one of the double header is set for 2 p.m. at Mount Vernon Softball Field.
