Softball Sweeps Howard in Home Opener
Colonials picked up a pair of shutout wins via run rule Wednesday
The Colonials also shut out the crosstown Bison in the opener at GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus with an 8-0 victory in six innings.
GW (9-3) put it all together in the second game with every hitter in the lineup recording at least one hit, boosted by the 12-run, 12-hit second inning.
A pair of freshmen paced the attack with Alessandra Ponce posting three hits and three RBIs and Sierra Lange adding a pair of hits with four batted in. It was the most runs the Colonials have scored since a 16-9 win over Virginia on Feb. 21, 2015.
Buff and Pilcher, meantime, breezed through the Howard order, teaming up for the fourth no-hitter in program history and first since 2013. Buff went the first three innings to pick up her first win of the season before Pilcher closed it out.
GW took the lead in the second inning on Martinez's solo shot to left field and kept adding on. Sidney Bloomfield slashed an RBI triple and later scored in a three-run third inning before Rinehart added her own RBI triple and came home on a double by Marta Fuentes.
The Colonials managed to end the game by run rule in the sixth with Rinehart racing home on an error to score the clinching run.
Lange held Howard scoreless over the first four innings to improve to 4-1 in her freshman season. She was followed by Faith Weber, who allowed one hit and struck out two over a pair of shutout frames.
GW 16, Howard 0 (Five innings): After going 1-2-3 in the first inning, the Colonials quickly broke the game open in their second time up.
GW sent 16 hitters to the plate in the inning, which started with singles from Ponce, Rinehart and Jessica Linquist. Lange cleared the bases with her shot to the left field corner, and the Colonials were just getting started.
Ponce, Rinehart, Linquist and Lange would all add second hits in the emphatic frame with the 12 runs coming against three different Howard hurlers. Eight different Colonials scored in the onslaught.
Buff and Pilcher made their own history in the pitching circle. Buff worked around three walks in her three innings before Pilcher retired six of the seven hitters she faced. Lange made a nifty catch in foul territory behind third base to finish the no-hitter.
ON DECK: GW is headed to the South Carolina Classic this weekend. The Colonials are scheduled for four games over three days, including a Saturday matchup with the host Gamecocks, who are ranked No. 20 nationally in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
