Softball Sweeps Non-Conference Doubleheader Against Georgetown, 12-0 and 17-0

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team won both games of a non-conference doubleheader against Georgetown, 12-0 and 17-0, Thursday afternoon at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Colonials closed out both contests in five innings and pounded out 32 hits over the two games against the Hoyas, which were playing their first varsity softball games in program history. With the victories, GW improves its record to 4-2 on the season, while Georgetown begins its inaugural campaign 0-2. In addition to the Colonials' stout offensive performance, which included five triples in game one and seven doubles in game two, GW's pitching staff allowed just four hits in the doubleheader and compiled 15 strikeouts. In the opener, GW scored three runs in the first highlighted by an RBI triple from sophomore Chrysanthi Halkiotis (Brookeville, MD), and a pair of RBI singles from sophomore Jackie Yaniga (Miami, FL) and junior Kaity Harbour (Macomb, MI). Halkiotis finished game one 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Yaniga went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Each player scored two runs. GW extended its lead to 8-0 in the second with junior Nikki Brooks (Chillicothe, OH), Halkiotis, Yaniga, sophomore Caroline Howe (Los Alamitos, CA) and Harbour each collecting RBI's in the inning. Yaniga and Howe each had RBI triples. The Colonials tacked on four more runs over the third and fourth innings to cap the scoring at 12-0. Sophomore Katie Miller (Manteo, NC) (1-0) earned her first win of the season for GW as she pitched 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. Freshman Carrie Higdon (Newburg, MD) came on in relief and tossed 2.0 innings while allowing just one hit.
GW jumped out to an early lead once again in the nightcap with two runs in the opening frame with Halkiotis and Yaniga collecting RBI's. The Colonials did the majority of their offensive damage over the next two innings, posting 13 runs on the board to take a 15-0 lead in the game. Yaniga delivered a two-run single in the second to highlight GW's six-run inning, while sophomore Gabby Culp (Desoto, TX) had a two-run triple to highlight a seven-run third inning. Miller added an RBI single in the fourth and freshman Tori Sensi (Skillman, NJ) had a run-scoring double to close out the scoring for the Colonials at 17-0. Freshman Kristin Gallant (Calabasas, CA) (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory as she went 3.0 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven of the 11 batters she faced. Sophomore Lisa Cohen (Langhorne, PA) pitched the final two innings and struck out three. Yaniga went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBI, while Cohen, Harbour, Sensi and sophomore Jenn George (Silver Spring, MD) each had two hits and at least one RBI. The Colonials (4-2) return to the field when they take on Colgate in the first game of the Colonial Classic on Saturday, March 4, at 9 a.m. at Mount Vernon Softball Field. GW, which will serve as host of the tournament, takes on Bucknell in its second game on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
