Softball Splits Games in First Day of Colonial Classic

WASHINGTON, DC - Junior Jackie Yaniga hit a game-winning two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to give the Colonials (4-2) a 5-4 win over Army in their first game of the Colonial Classic.

Down 4-3 to start the inning, the Black Knights got two quick outs before sophomore Carrie Higdon singled. Yaniga then delivered shot to right field for her third home run of the season. Higdon then got three quick outs to finish off Army in their half of the seventh.

Army got on the board first win a run on one hit in the bottom of the first. The Colonials tied it at one with an RBI single by junior Hilary King in the top of the third. The game didn't score tied for long as the Black Knights scored two in their half of the third to make it 3-1.

GW tied it again in the fourth with an RBI single by senior Nikki Brooks which scored juniors Chrysanthi Halkiotis and Colleen Kegler.

Army took a 4-3 lead in their half of the inning and held that advantage until Yaniga's game winning homer.

Carrie Higdon got the win for GW after relieving Amanda Gabriel in the fifth inning. Higdon gave up only one hit and struck out two in 2.1 innings of work. Higdon also had a great day at the plate going 2-4 on the day.

Senior Elana Meyers also had two hits in the win over Army.

The Colonials could not muster much offense versus Colgate in the second game of the day. The lone run for the Colonials came off a solo homerun by King in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Lisa Cohen pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief of junior Katie Miller.

The Colonials will play Canisius at 11:00 am in GW's lone game in the second day of the Colonial Classic.
