Softball Drops A Pair at Colonial Classic

March 2, 2008

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington softball team dropped a pair of games at its 3rd Annual Colonial Classic Sunday at Mount Vernon Softball Field. The Colonials dropped the opener 3-1 to Canisius, and fell to UMBC, 9-4 in five innings in the final game. The matchup against UMBC was called in five due to darkness.

Both the Colonials and Griffins were kept scoreless by opposing pitchers the first four innings, but GW took a one-run lead after its half of the fifth. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Amanda got the inning started with a two-out walk and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior Chrysanthi Halkiotis then walked, and was followed by an RBI single to center field by Tori Sensi, scoring Gabriel from second.

The lead was short lived as Canisius got to Gabriel in its half of the frame. Brittany Boneeto drove in two runs with a double to left and Jenny Maheu drove in another on a groundout.

GW had their best chance to open up a big lead in the first inning as they had two runners in scoring position with only one out.

Amanda Gabriel took the loss despite the one bad inning. The Fullerton, CA, native struck out 10 Griffins in six innings, while allowing just five hits.

The Colonials dropped its second game of the day to UMBC, as the Retrievers scored seven runs in the first two innings. GW cut the lead to three in the third, capped off by a grand slam home run by Halkiotis to score Gabriel, junior Carrie Higdon and senior Katie Miller.

UMBC tacked on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings while GW was held scoreless as the game was called after five innings due to darkness.

Junior Tori Sensi and freshman Katie Terrazas both had a pair of hits to lead the Colonials offensively, while redshirt-sophomore Elisa Van Kirk (1-4, 2 walks) also reached base three times on the day. Plus there was Halkiotis' home run which provided most of the runs for GW on the day.

GW (2-5) is back in action against the same Retrievers (2-6) Tuesday, March 4 at UMBC in a 1:00 pm doubleheader. The Colonials return home Sunday, march 9 for a 12:00 pm doubleheader against Bucknell.
